p. 1064-1071 Read aloud about the monsters

Charybdis—Cuh RIB Dis
Do: On a piece of notebook paper and they will turn it in.—have them divide their paper into 4 boxes. Extra paper in drawers by closet.
Have them write: Cyclops (one-eyed giant), Charybdis (whirlpool with teeth), Scylla (sea serpent), Sirens (bird girls or evil mermaids) in each box and leave space for them to draw a picture and a short summary of what happens in each story.

Pass out “Monster Trading Card” worksheet. They need to work on this the rest of the class and finish it at home. Choose ONE of the monsters (they can do Cyclops but they will need to read on their own). In the “picture” section, they need to cover ALL white space. They can use crayons, pencils, markers, paint. NO stick figures. Remind them that an “A” means doing above and beyond what is asked for. I have some examples—you can show them, but don’t leave them out.
· Focus on rules of hospitality—Greek culture
· Hubris: excessive pride or self-confidence. This gets him in trouble with the gods. He brags to Poseidon’s SON what he just did—I think Poly (Fee-Mus) might tell his daddy…
· Cunning Odysseus: means tricky, smart, clever—sometimes this quality can be good or bad.
o “Nobody” name
o Giving him wine to knock him out
o Poking his eye out
o Pretending to be sheep to escape
o Not killing him because they need him to move the rock

What is an epithet?The early story tellers didn't want you to struggle remembering who was whom, so they often described the person/ god/ goddess/ thing the same way each time. Much the same as we see TV characters and cartoons always wearing the same clothes. It is easier that way. Some epithets in The Odyssey are:

O.K., not my game and not really a video game; however, if you can make it through the game, you know the story and it is a whole lot better to study this way rather than to read notes over again...

If you have already received such a “gift,” DO NOT OPEN IT! Wheel it back out of the city unopened and set fire to it by the beach.
