In American literature, we learn about the genocide Columbus launched against the Taínos, or Washington’s scorched-earth war on the Iroquois, or even Abraham Lincoln’s promise in his first inaugural address to support a constitutional amendment making slavery permanent in Southern states.
We read about so many that made a difference in American history. this is because they’ve been denied a more honorable past with which to identify—one that acknowledges racism and exploitation, but also highlights courageous initiatives for social equality and justice.

 The Unsung Hero Research Project

unsung hero: (n) one who has created positive change in history by improving the lives of others, but has yet to be widely recognized
Unsung Heroes are role models whose remarkable acts of courage, compassion, selflessness, perseverance and, quite possibly, sacrifice make a profound and positive difference on the course of history. They change our world for the better, but most of us have never heard of them. Now you can be a part of bringing these extraordinary stories to light in order to inspire people to take actions that improve the lives of others. Unsung Heroes teach the power one has to make a difference—and you have that power to make a difference, too.
  • Assignment #1: Write your own personal definition of a hero and briefly tell me the 3 reasons you chose your hero (this should be a minimum of 50 words typed EACH).  You will also need to do this for your second choice also (which 50+50=100 words total).

Modern stories, television programs and films often follow the archetypal pattern of a hero --an imperfect person who displays fierce determination, courage, and resolve in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges. The hero is the person who rises to the occasion—one who others look up to as a figure of hope that the impossible is actually possible to attain.

You will choose a modern day hero to research—but they need to be an unsung hero, which means unknown--not Oprah, Princess Diana, JFK, Lincoln, Barak Obama, or Tupac. Your objective is to prove that the person you chose merits the distinction of being regarded as a hero. You must research the life of your chosen person and show how this person has overcome obstacles and learned lessons as a result of the challenges they have had to face. Thus, you must show in what ways this person’s life parallels the typical pattern of the hero. You must ask yourself: what qualities make this person a hero? What distinguishes this person? What challenges has this person faced? What contributions has this person made to the world? What lessons has this person learned?
